Residency Training

Our college welcomes graduate veterinarians interested in pursuing advanced training in clinical pharmacology.  Clinical pharmacology is a powerful discipline that crosses species including small and large animal medicine with potential employment opportunities following program completion in academia, industry, clinical practice, and consulting.  Approved training programs and supervisors are listed below.  ACVCP residents are not matched through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) but rather by application to individual program sites.  Please reach out to program directors to learn more about residency programs at specific schools and to learn if a residency position is available.

All residency programs provide training that supports development of an advanced knowledge of the many complex factors that constitute rational drug therapy in animal patients. Training programs may or may not incorporate an advanced academic degree in veterinary pharmacology or a related discipline.  Desired learning outcomes from residency training programs include that residents:
  • understand the basic mechanisms and pathophysiologic features of a wide variety of diseases occurring in companion and food-producing animals
  • understand the role of drugs in modifying the disease process, and the potential complications caused by the drug administration
  • be familiar with recent advances in chemotherapy and therapeutics of serious diseases
  • understand the design and interpretation of experiments designed for pharmacology studies in laboratory or clinical animals
  • understand the animal drug regulations in the United States and the drug approval process for new companion and food-producing animal drugs
